Annual dynamics of soil organic matter in the context of long-term trends

چکیده
[1] Long-term research has provided a great deal of information regarding the influence of management on the equilibrium dynamics of soil organic matter (SOM), although short-term dynamics remain largely uninvestigated. An improved approach to characterizing SOM dynamics in managed ecosystems would consider both short-term and long-term changes in content and composition. This approach and its implications are illustrated for an experimental site comparing agricultural management practices. Changes in soil C composition were assessed semiquantitatively using C natural abundance measurements, demonstrating their useful although rarely applied role in short-term studies. This information is a valuable complement to long-term data, since net differences since the site’s inception fail to reveal a timeline marked by repeated changes in soil C content and composition. Such data are also useful for reinforcing and understanding long-term simulation models, which are typically driven by temporally dynamic events but are often fit against temporally sparse SOM data sets.

Studying Short-Time Dynamics of Vegetation and Soil Organic Carbon in a Semi-arid Rangeland (Case Study: Zharf, Khorasan Province, Iran)
Abstract. Rangeland vegetation dynamics encompass all processes of changes in vegetation composition and structure over time. Investigating the rangeland ecosystem dynamics makes it possible to determine the effects of climatic and management conditions on qualitative and quantitative changes of the vegetation in a specific period of time. Accordingly, data collection and measurements for evalu...

Hydrologic regime is highly dependent on climate change, as hydrologic cycle components are directly influenced by climatic conditions. This paper analyzes the impacts of climate change on the hydrologic regime of the Atrak River basin in the northeast of Iran. It drains to the Caspian Sea. The data collected at 11 hydrometeorological stations were examined to detect trends in hydroclimatologic...

Climate variability and change is threatening water resources around the world. One hundred and fourtheen (114) stations from Reference Hydrometric Basin Network (RHBN) around Canada with at least 30 years continuous data (up to 2011) were selected to study the trend in mean annual runoff for different periods of 30 to 100 years in step 10 years by non-parametric Mann-Kendall test. Effect of sh...

Organic fertilization has been practiced in Iran due to the shortage of soil organic matter. In recent years, attention has been payed to the organic fertilizers because their commercial production has recently started and demands for their application have increased. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of organic fertilizer type, rates and times of application on the...

Introduction: Carbon stored in soils particularly in arid rangelands soils is the most significant carbon sink in terrestrial ecosystems. In arid rangelands, Soils have special places in both carbon sequestration and mitigate global warming. Therefore, any small change in the soil organic carbon (SOC) leads to a significant impact on the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. Studies have shown t...
